As we look forward to 2015 and reflect on 2014, here is some great news courtesy of Bill Gates and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. While 2014 saw a good deal of tumult at home and abroad, it also saw significant advances for humanity.
The child mortality rate fell for at least the 42nd year in a row. The fight against AIDS reached a critical tipping point. The woefully under-recognized fight against rotavirus (a disease that has killed hundreds of thousands of children annually) made major advances, as the vaccine reached more kids than ever before. Tuberculosis treatment research had a much-needed breakthrough. And Nigeria made significant progress in fighting both Polio and Ebola.
Last year's good news serves both as inspiration for the year ahead and as a reminder of all the work left to do.
